At last! – a definitive new CD from Saxtet, reflecting the diverse interests and huge talents of the vibrant, current line-up.
Urban Groove has eleven tracks (eight original compositions and three new arrangements), ranging from the mellow-with-attitude (Powerful Tower) to the sweetly melancholy (Broken Promises), from blisteringly tight ensemble work to flying improvisation (Stevie Wonder’s I Wish), and from beautiful arrangements of standards à la Gil Evans to good 'ol high-energy fun (Back to Bat).
Distilled from the quintet’s best work over the last couple of years, the music draws on influences as wide-ranging as Ellington and Piazolla, with nods to the World Saxophone Quartet and Tower of Power. Fans of the works of Karen Street and Andrew Tweed will recognize their distinctive voices in the bari-rich buzz of Andy’s title track Urban Groove and the poignant lyricism of Karen’s Kurt Weill arrangement My Ship, but will also discover a wealth of sophisticated, imaginative and moving new material from Luke Annesley, Jamie Anderson and Richard Exall.
The sound is what we’ve come to expect from Saxtet – suave but gutsy – with the colourful addition of accordion and clarinets on selected tracks.
CDs are just £12.00.
Saxtet Publications will be publishing several of the titles arranged for quartet.
