Jay Anthony Gach won Saxtet Publications' 2004 Saxophone Quartet Composition Competition with his Trains, steam whistles and radiator pipes, so-called because saxophone ensembles often remind him of these natural and artificial environmental sounds. It may not be an entirely flattering comparison (for saxophonists), but it inspired a vivid and appealing piece with a panache and polish that distinguished it from the 35 other strong contenders for the title. The prize was publication by SXP, plus performance at the Gala Concert of the 2005 British Saxophone Congress by the winners of SXP's Saxophone Quartet Competition, the impressive and appealing French ensemble, Contraste.
