Gavin Whitlock

Gavin started playing the saxophone at the age of fifteen and almost immediately decided to specialise in the larger members of the saxophone family.

While he was still at school, he performed regularly in local jazz and function bands on baritone, clarinet and double bass, an instrument he played for three years in the Wiltshire Youth Orchestra. However, after deciding to focus on woodwind instruments, he spent the final two years playing the contrabassoon in the orchestra.

Gavin attended Trinity College of Music where he studied saxophone with Gerard McChrystal and arranging with Paul Bartholomew. He played for four years in Trinity Big Band where Bobby Lamb, the band's director, gave him valuable advice on matters of scoring and encouraged him to write for the band. He was part of the line-up, playing bass (and a bit of baritone) in the orchestra that recorded the Trinity Big Band CD, Cuban Fire, in 1999.

Since leaving college, Gavin has toured Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Denmark, The Czech Republic and Eire.
