Jeffery studied composition at the Royal College of Music with John Lambert and Herbert Howells, later with Aladar Majorossy, Gordon Jacob and Olivier Messiaen.
He has produced over 150 works, about a third of which have been published, and he has been composer in residence in over a dozen European cities and with some notable orchestras, including the London Festival Orchestra, London Mozart Players and the Northern Sinfonia.
Jeffery also has a very diverse and busy musical life beyond composing and finds particular fulfilment in teaching. He has taught at Junior Guildhall since 1994 and is currently co-ordinator of composition there as well as being principal examiner (Jazz) for Guildhall exams. He is on the panel of supervisors for the Music faculty at Cambridge, he teaches jazz saxophone at the Colchester Institute and until recently, he was visiting lecturer in Saxophone, Improvisation and Composition at the Utrecht Conservatorium in Holland. He is also in demand as an adjudicator, a role which has taken him all over the UK and most of Europe.
