Three Pieces for Alto Saxophone & Piano

Description

These three pieces were specially written for the Saxophonist, Rob Burton, and are dedicated (with permission) to the composer John Rutter. For me, music should always be richly creative but also connect hearts, delight the ear and move the soul. At a time where some composers continue to turn their backs on the still potent resource of melody and harmony, for me Rutter’s commitment to accessibility has been an inspiration.

Each of the three pieces has some jazz inflections and content. Cantilena is vocally inspired in a smooth, lyrical style. Night Song is a slow indulgent jazz melody which I later developed in the Summer movement of my Symphonic Suite, The Seasons. Rag-time is a fun piece, full of musical jokes, and has references to famous first world war songs, as these pieces were originally written for a Help the Heroes First World War Memorial Concert. The saxophone and piano parts are demanding, but as we’ve found in concert they make great and entertaining recital content.
